General Event Questions
Do I have to dress up / how should I dress?
You may dress up as a historical character (and a limited selection of items will be available for purchase at the event), but otherwise, street clothing is acceptable. If you plan to dress as a historical character, and would like guidance on your outfit, feel free to send us an email at outfits@outlandgateadventures.ca
We reserve the right to deny entry if you are dressed inappropriately for the general public, or if you are dressed as another fandom. While we love the creativity and passion involved in creating these costumes, divergent clothing makes it more challenging to maintain the time stream accurately, and may be considered disturbing or offensive to our hosts.
Can I bring food and drink into the event?
No, we have a no outside food or drink policy.
Water will be available for free, and additional refreshment will be available for a nominal fee.
Is your event family / child friendly?
Yes! Some jokes and innuendo will go over the heads of the kids but our event will be adjusted dynamically to accommodate children, including activities and actor performances.
Can I bring my pet? What about a service animal?
We have a no pets policy.
For service animals, we follow all applicable guidelines regarding their accommodation. If your disability is not obvious and your service animal is not marked as one, you will be asked to provide appropriate documentation on entry to our event site. You can contact us ahead of the event if you wish to pre-clear your service animal, to save you time.
Service animals are required to be under your control at all times. If it is determined by event leadership that your animal poses a risk to other customers or is misbehaving, you may be asked to leave. As a reminder, your ticket purchase is non-refundable, including in this circumstance.
Do you have a lost and found?
Staff members who you may return found items to will have a special badge. Additionally, you may either return items or collect items at our Gate Services area near the gate. After the event, you may contact our office via email.
What payment methods can I use at the event?
For all food and beverage, special services, or other purchases, our Gate Services desk can only accept debit or credit card payments. Cash payments require special handling, and may not be available. There are no ATMs on the event grounds. Depending on your purchase, you will be provided with a token to redeem in other areas of our event.
Gate Technology
How does your gate work?
The short version of this is that when you walk through the gate, you are aligned to a specific location in what is called a time stream. This process is painless, and with the version of the technology we have been given access, will wear off naturally within a few hours (if you have not been re-aligned to our home time stream by walking back through the gate). For the longer version, visit our technology provider Outland Gate Innovations.
Is it safe?
While every adventure carries a level of risk due to the nature of the environment, we have worked hard to ensure this is a safe experience. Our partner has worked to ensure their technology is stable, and have logged extensive time in other time streams. We strongly encourage you to pay attention to the safety briefing before you enter the gate, as this is designed to make your trip one to remember for the right reasons!
What have you done to mitigate any risks?
The technology we use has been extensively tested by our partners at Outland Gate Innovations. We have created a detailed safe travel plan, which addresses basic concerns including fire, missing persons, and medical emergencies, as well as more specialized concerns including the security of you, our Viking hosts, and the history of the timeline we visit. Additionally, we have a small security force patrolling the event site, in the case of disturbances.
Will my phone, camera, or other electronic device still work after I pass through the gate?
Our friends at Outland Gate Innovations have a more detailed answer to this, but yes your technology will still work after transiting the gate.
Due to the location of the event, it is possible you may not have cell reception, but we will be arranging for an emergency contact number that you can provide to others for the duration of your visit.
The Next Event
Where are you located?
The specific location will be announced closer to the event date.
Since the event is outdoors, what if the weather is bad?
The event is a rain or shine event. In the case that the weather will be horrible, we will cancel the event and notify all guests at least 48 hours before, via our social media feeds, email, as well as on this web page. Refunds will be issued in this instance.
When / where can I park? Will parking cost anything?
Parking is FREE! Event parking will open an hour before the start of the event, to give everyone an opportunity to arrive for the safety briefing and the opening of the gate itself. More specific details will be announced closer to the event date.
Is this event handicapped accessible?
While some parts of our site may be accessible, due to the nature of the event site, mobility may be limited.
Where is the first aid tent?
You will find the first aid next to our Gate Services table, next to the entrance.
Is there cell service or Wi-Fi at the event site?
We do not offer public Wi-Fi at the park. Additionally, while the gate technology will allow cell signals to pass through, the event is hosted in an area where the signal may be weak.
No Seriously, What Is All This? Spoilers and Backstory
If you’re confused, or have questions, this will answer all, but will break immersion.
Hi, welcome to the out of character answer!
What is “out of character”, and how does it relate to everything else?
In and out of character, in relation to this website, mean that everything is a fiction. All the content on this website is considered “in character”, or tied to the fictional story of this event. This is the only “out of character” content, which means it is the only thing that tells you what is actually truthfully going on.
What is the gate, and all that other stuff?
The “Outland Gate” is a fictional technology provided by the fictional company Outland Gate Innovations. This company, Outland Gate Adventures, is a real registered NB corporation, which is playing the role of a fictional travel agency, using the “Outland Gate” to provide adventures to historical times and places. This “Outland Gate” does not actually exist, it’s all just stagecraft, special effects, and storytelling.
So what is actually going on?
Unusual Events Corp, our parent company, is using this story to package up special events. The staff and volunteers for these events are giant nerds, and want to have fun making some fun experiences to share with everyone! The events this year are intended to test the market and see if there is an appetite for this kind of medieval themed event, and see if we can make enough of a business at it to be able to do more events.
How can I get involved / more involved?
If you want to see more of these kinds of events, you can help us out a lot by:
– buying tickets and having fun
– following us / sharing our posts on Instagram and Facebook
– tagging us in your photos and videos about our events
– buying any of our merch you like (there will be some on sale on ticket purchase, and some at the events)
– leaving reviews for us
– volunteering at one of our future events ( volunteer_support@outlandgateadventures.ca )
– telling our volunteers / staff how much fun you had, or what you think about their costumes and gear ( a lot of time and work went into them )
